Code Camp Oz 09 Retrospective

This post is going to be my look back at Code Camp Oz 09. I had a great time, met a lot of great people and learned lots of interesting things.

I flew from Brisbane to Canberra, had a look around and picked up my rental car. My crappy Corolla was not ready so I got upgraded to an Aurion Sportivo.

A visit to parliment house turned out to be worthwhile. They have one of four copies of the final amended magna carta. This is the document that wrote basic human rights into English law. It was published in 1297.

I arrived in Wagga Wagga friday night and got a great steak at the union hotel. The conference started at 8 Saturday morning. The AV was not working in the main theatre so the first two presentation were in a smaller room. Once they got the AV fixed we moved back to the main theatre. Adam Cogan did his presentation on using sharepoint for public sites. The Cogan-Oddie banter that occurred was probably the highlight of the entire conference.

My presentation folled Adam's. For some reason the VGA cable was not long enough to reach the microphone so everyone presented acoustically. Apparently my voice was not loud enough without the mic so quite a few people weren't able to hear me. I had a heckler of my own - she asked what SOLID stands for. Thanks to a quick Mitch Denny google I was able to get that sorted out. After I finished a number of people found me and we chatted a bit more about ALT.NET. I think that I managed to introduce the concept to a few more people so I consider the exercise a success.

Once my talk was over I was able to relax. My favourite talks from the conference were 'Aspect Orientated Programming in .NET' by Paul Stovell & Omar Besiso and '6 Design Patterns that Every Developer Should Know' by Justin King. They were both good presentations that focused on principles rather than tools. I can learn tools from the book.

Unfortunately I missed the last two presentations because I had to get back to Canberra for my plane. It was good to see so many interested professionals giving up their time for a weekend to sharpen their saws.

The most important thing I learnt was what macbook airs are good for.
